What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are ultra-thin sheaths of dental porcelain that can be affixed to the front-facing surfaces of the teeth that are visible in the smile. Once placed, veneers can improve your smile in multiple ways at the same time. For example, they can:

Every single veneer is 100% tailored to a patient’s unique needs. Additionally, dental porcelain has an incredible ability to mimic tooth enamel, even in the way that it reflects light. As a result, you can rest easy knowing that your new smile will look and feel flawlessly natural.

The Process of Getting Veneers

Not including your initial consultation, it takes two appointments to receive veneers. During the first of these visits, your cosmetic dentist in Greeley prepares your teeth for veneer placement by shaving off an extremely thin sliver of enamel from the surface. This step ensures the veneers sit flush and don’t protrude from the line of your smile. Next, we capture impressions of your teeth and send them to a trusted dental lab. While the lab technicians design your veneers to our exact specifications, we can place temporaries to protect your teeth.

Your permanent veneers should arrive at our office after a few short weeks. At this point, you’ll return to our office, where we’ll remove your temporaries and make any last-minute adjustments to your final veneers before bonding them into place.

Veneers are an excellent option if you are looking for a drastic smile makeover, but they aren’t necessarily the best choice for everyone. Veneers may seem like the ideal option at first, but it’s important that you take a lot at other cosmetic solutions to see how they can affect your smile. They all have different price points and help patients to achieve a variety of different goals. Here are just a few of the more common cosmetic treatments that are available:

Are Veneers Permanent?

Veneers will eventually have to be replaced, which means they’re technically not considered a permanent cosmetic solution. However, the process for getting them is irreversible. Our cosmetic dentist will need to file away a small amount of enamel to ensure the veneers fit properly on the teeth. And unlike hair and nails, the enamel will never grow back once it’s removed. Because of that, prepared teeth will always need to be covered with crowns or veneers for protection.

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

After your teeth are prepared, you’ll receive temporary veneers to wear in the meantime while your permanent ones are made. Since they won’t be cemented to your teeth, you’ll need to be careful with the foods you eat. Avoid hard foods (i.e., ice, raw fruits and vegetables, candy), sticky foods (i.e., caramel, gum, toffee), and dark-colored foods and drinks (i.e., soda, coffee, tea). Not only can they damage your restorations, but they can stain them as well. Once your permanent veneers are in place, you should continue to exercise caution with hard, crunchy, tough foods.

Do Veneers Give You a Lisp?

When you first get veneers, you may find it difficult to pronounce certain words or make specific sounds, particularly the “s” and “v” sounds. Most patients develop a temporary lisp or other speech impediment because their tongue is not used to talking with veneers. The restorations are thin, but the minute difference in thickness still affects the way the tongue moves. Luckily, any speech alterations should go away as soon as you adjust to speaking with veneers. You can speed up the adjustment process by practicing the pronunciation of certain words, having more conversations with loved ones, and asking your dentist to reduce the thickness of your restorations in specific areas.

Can Veneers Be Used for Bite Corrections?

It depends on the severity of the bite problem. Since veneers cannot change the actual position of the teeth and jaw, they’re not ideal for severe issues that cause oral health problems. However, they are recommended if your problems are mild but still affect your appearance. For instance, if you have a mild open bite, veneers can make the teeth look longer and wider, so they appear to line up correctly. The restorations can also hide small gaps between the teeth.
