mother and daughter brushing each other's teethSince COVID-19 is so contagious and doesn’t always present symptoms, the best way to keep your family healthy is to practice social distancing. However, if your child is stuck at home without a normal routine, they may be more prone to developing bad dental habits. The last thing you need while in quarantine is for your little one to get a toothache! Here are eight tips from your Greeley dentist to help your little one take care of their smile while they’re stuck at home.

Tip #1: Don’t Forget to Brush

Your family’s daily schedule probably looks much different than it once did. Amidst all the changes, don’t forget to encourage them to brush their teeth every morning and night. Not only will the familiar routine help keep your child’s smile clean, but it may help to keep their minds a little more at ease too.

Tip #2: Make Toothbrushing Entertaining

You can help your son or daughter remember to brush their teeth regularly by making it more fun. Try reading to them or playing a catchy song for two minutes while they brush to keep them entertained.

Tip #3: Regulate Their Toothpaste Use

Most kids use far too much toothpaste. To avoid an extra trip to the store, make sure your little one is only using a drop the size of a pea if they’re older than five, and less if they’re younger.

Tip #4: Cook Healthy Meals Together

Making family meals together is a great way to keep your child entertained and productive. It’s also an excellent opportunity to teach them about nutrition, oral health, and how they’re connected.

Tip #5: Keep Snacks Put Away

Both you and your son or daughter are more likely to snack on unhealthy treats if they’re easily accessible. Keep cavities at bay by putting snacks away and out of sight.

Tip #6: Encourage Healthy Habits

The healthy habits you help your child establish during quarantine can benefit them for a lifetime. Make a habit chart so they can see their progress and set healthy, fun goals for them to work towards.

Tip #7: Be a Good Role Model

Studies show that children are much more likely to practice healthy behaviors if they see their parents leading by example. Brushing your teeth with your son or daughter will keep them engaged and allow you to keep an eye on their dental habits. Additionally, it ensures that you’re taking time to care for your own smile as well.

About the Practice

While our talented team at Greeley Complete Dentistry is more than capable of repairing damaged smiles, we’d much rather help our patients prevent oral health issues from happening in the first place. That’s why Dr. Blake Cure and Dr. Mark Smith recommend all their patients to come in for a biannual dental checkup and cleaning. However, now more than ever, they firmly believe that excellent at-home smile care is essential to a happy, healthy smile. If you or your child is experiencing a dental emergency, or if you have more questions or concerns, please contact them via their website or at (970) 356-7474.
